The Power of Alignment: Turning Team Effort Into Agency Momentum

You Don’t Have a People Problem. You Have an Alignment Problem.

Hard work doesn't automatically create results.

An agency can have talented, experienced people who care deeply about their work, and still struggle to move forward.

Why? Because everyone may be working hard toward a different priority.

In this episode of the Agent Leader Podcast, Brent Kelly continues the four-step Sitkins process for building a Best Version Possible agency: Clarify → Align → Execute → Optimize.

After exploring clarity in the previous episode, Brent dives into the power of alignment, and why alignment is what turns individual effort into organizational momentum.

Key Points From This Episode

Alignment isn't about making everyone the same.
Different people have different roles, responsibilities, and expertise. Alignment means everyone understands how their role contributes to the same result.

Everything can't be a priority.
When an agency has 15 priorities, it effectively has none. Leaders need to identify the vital few outcomes that deserve the organization's greatest time, energy, and attention.

Clear roles strengthen accountability.
People can't be accountable for expectations that were never clearly defined. Every team member should understand their responsibility, how they fit into the team, and what success looks like in their role.

Common language creates common understanding.
Words like “ideal client,” “proactive service,” “organic growth,” and “continuations” can mean different things to different people. When everyone uses the same words but attaches different meanings to them, communication quickly becomes confusion.

Goals inspire. Standards sustain.
Goals tell you what you want to accomplish. Standards define how you operate while pursuing them. High-performance organizations establish standards for how work gets done and how decisions are made.

Alignment doesn't mean complete agreement.
Healthy leadership teams should debate ideas, challenge assumptions, and bring different perspectives to the table. But once a decision is made, the team needs to align around it. As Brent puts it: “Debate before the decision. Align after the decision.”

The Five Requirements for Alignment

  1. One Vision - Where are we going?
  2. Shared Priorities - What matters most right now?
  3. Clear Roles - What is my responsibility and what does success look like?
  4. Common Language - Do we mean the same thing when we use important terms?
  5. Consistent Standards - How do we expect people to operate and perform?

Try This Alignment Test

Ask your leadership team these three questions:

1. What is the most important result our agency is pursuing right now?

2. What is my role in helping us achieve it?

3. What standards and behaviors are required from me?

Then do something that can be difficult for leaders:

Ask your key people, and shut up and listen.

If you receive dramatically different answers, don't immediately blame the team. You've identified an alignment gap, and that means leadership has work to do.

Your Challenge This Week

Identify one shared priority in your agency.

Write it down in simple language, then define how leadership, sales, and service each contribute to achieving it.

Different roles. Different responsibilities. One shared outcome.

That's alignment.
